Shree Ananthapadmanabha Swamy Temple

Located in Ananthapura, about 6 km from Kumbla in the Kasaragod district of Kerala, Shree Ananthapadmanabha Swamy Temple holds a unique distinction as the only lake temple in Kerala. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple is considered the original seat (moolasthanam) of the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The presiding deity, Lord Vishnu, is worshipped here in the form of Ananthapadmanabha, reclining on the serpent Anantha, symbolizing eternal cosmic balance and divine protection.

The temple, believed to be over a thousand years old, is situated in the center of a serene lake, giving it a mystical charm. Devotees reach the sanctum by crossing a small bridge built over the water. The ancient carvings, murals, and traditional Kerala architecture add to the temple’s spiritual aura.

A fascinating aspect of this temple is the presence of ‘Babiya’, a harmless vegetarian crocodile that guards the temple lake. Local legends say that only one crocodile lives in the lake at any time, and when one dies, another mysteriously appears. Devotees believe that this divine guardian is blessed by Lord Vishnu himself.

The temple follows ancient customs and rituals, maintaining the sanctity of traditional Vaishnavite worship. Major festivals like Vishu, Janmashtami, and Navaratri are celebrated with grandeur, attracting devotees and visitors from all over India.

With its tranquil surroundings, mythological heritage, and divine presence, the Ananthapura Lake Temple remains a sacred symbol of Kerala’s deep spiritual legacy and architectural brilliance.
